A younger tribal couple from a village in Gujarat’s Chhotaudepur district was allegedly kidnapped, tied to a tree and thrashed with sticks as a punishment for eloping, the police stated on Wednesday.
The police have arrested 9 males for the alleged assault that occurred in Chiliyavant village underneath the Rangpur police station in Chhotaudepur district on Tuesday, Deputy Superintendent of Police AV Katkad stated.
A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, confirmed some males taking turns to beat the couple, who had been tied to a tree, with sticks within the presence of different villagers, the police stated.
On studying in regards to the incident via the video, the police rushed to the village on Wednesday and arrested the accused on the fees of rioting, kidnapping and unlawful confinement primarily based on a grievance filed by the lady, the official stated.
“The couple had eloped on July 18 with an intention of getting married. However, angry villagers eventually traced them to a neighbouring village and brought them back to Chiliyavant on Tuesday morning. The accused tied the duo to a tree and thrashed them with sticks,” the DySP stated.
The sufferer in her grievance has claimed that the accused had been indignant as a result of an area custom bars marriage of man and lady from the identical village, it was acknowledged.
